The San Diego Historical Society is an educational and cultural institution dedicated to preserving and sharing its growing historical collections and extensive archives with its members, visitors, and the community. They strive to connect the past to the future so all generations will understand and appreciate the richness of San Diego's regional history. The Historical Society maintains four separate museum facilities.
The Junípero Serra Museum, located in Presidio Park, is one of the most familiar landmarks in San Diego. As a major symbol of the city, it stands atop the hill recognized as the site where California began. It was here in 1769 that a Spanish Franciscan missionary, Father Junípero Serra, with a group of soldiers led by Gaspar de Portolá, established Alta California’s first mission and presidio (fort).
The Historical Society's other museum facilities include the Museum of San Diego History and the Marston House, both located in Balboa Park, and Villa Montezuma, which is located in downtown San Diego.
