Imperial Beach is located south of the San Diego Bay near the start of the Coronado peninsula, in the town of the same name, Imperial Beach. This beach is ideal for swimming, jogging, sunbathing and some world-class surfing. With ample parking and clusters of restaurants and retail shops in close proximity, one can pick up a quick picnic lunch or dine in a restaurant with an ocean view.
The perfect place for a picnic on the beach and some enjoyable family-fun is Dunes Park, a new beachfront park with state-of-the-art playground equipment, a volleyball area and picnic tables. A special feature of this park includes the recent addition of Ocean Riders, a seven foot high bronze sculpture, by the renown artist Wyland.
Imperial Beach is home to the annual U.S. Open Sandcastle Competition each July. This is the largest sandcastle building competition in the United States and encompasses a full weekend of activities, including a street festival, live music and entertainment.
