The San Diego Hall of Champions Sports Museum evolved from the Breitbard Athletic Foundation, an organization Bob Breitbard founded in 1946 to honor San Diego athletes. What began as sports memorabilia collected by Breitbard in his garage has grown into a San Diego institution. Among the first donations to the museum were bats Ted Williams used to hit .406 in 1941, a racket Maureen Connolly used to win Wimbledon and Archie Moore's gloves and robes from a championship boxing match.
The Hall of Champions outgrew its first two homes and is now located in the Federal Building, a historic facility in Balboa Park built for 1915-1916 Panama-California Exhibition and refurbished for the Hall in 1999. The scope of the Hall's exhibits cover sports from high school to college to professional. There are the traditional sports of baseball and football as well as exhibits for the Bass Fishing Hall of Fame, Surfing Legends, Action Sports and Disabled Athletes.
The Hall includes the All-Star Café that is open daily, along with the Store of Champions for souvenir hunters.
There is something for everyone to enjoy at the San Diego Hall of Champions. Its place for old-time San Diegans and transplants to celebrate a city that loves all kinds of sports and honors sporting legends both homegrown and adopted.
